The Consumer Product Safety Administration states that 28,000 Americans die and 33,000 others are injured annually by consumer products.
The law used to state that it was the responsibility of the purchaser to insure safety. That is no longer the case. Now manufacturers must guarantee the safety of their products.
There are 3 broad areas of product defects:
- manufacturing defects,
- design defects,
- failure to give consumers warning of potential dangers.
Products can range from manufacturing machinery to a child's toy. In fact, the federal government reports that there are nearly 150,000 toy-related injuries treated in emergency rooms each year.
